Why Copilot Became the Default

GitHub Copilot launched in June 2022 and within 18 months became the most widely adopted AI developer tool in history. By early 2025 it had surpassed 1.8 million paying subscribers and was generating over $100 million in annual recurring revenue for GitHub (owned by Microsoft).

Why did Copilot win the first wave? Three reasons:

1.Distribution. GitHub is where 100 million developers already host their code. Copilot launched inside an ecosystem developers were already using every day.
2.Minimal disruption. Copilot is a VS Code extension. You install it, sign in, and your editor works exactly as before — except now an AI is suggesting code as you type. No new editor to learn. No new workflow to adopt.
3.It actually works. Powered by OpenAI's Codex (and later GPT-4), Copilot's suggestions are good enough to accept roughly 30% of the time on the first suggestion. That may not sound impressive, but across a full day of coding it eliminates enormous amounts of typing.
