What Claude Code Is

Claude Code is Anthropic's autonomous coding agent. It runs in your terminal — not in a code editor, not in a browser. You give it a task in natural language, and it reads your codebase, plans an approach, writes and modifies code across multiple files, runs commands, and presents you with the result.

Think of it as the difference between a GPS that suggests turns (Copilot) and a GPS that can actually drive the car (Claude Code). You still decide the destination and review the route, but the mechanical execution — reading files, understanding architecture, making changes, running tests — is handled by the agent.

Claude Code was released in early 2025 and quickly became the tool of choice for experienced developers tackling complex, multi-file tasks. It is not a replacement for an editor. It is a new category of tool that sits alongside your editor.
