Why Cursor Exists

Cursor launched in early 2023 with a bold thesis: the best AI coding experience cannot be built as a plugin. It has to be the editor itself. The team — founded by MIT graduates — forked VS Code so that every keyboard shortcut, extension, and setting you already know still works. But under the hood, the editor was rebuilt around AI as the primary way you interact with code.

By mid-2025, Cursor had become the fastest-growing code editor in developer history. Their growth rate exceeded VS Code's own early trajectory. The reason is simple: once developers experience Cursor's level of AI integration, going back to Copilot-in-VS-Code feels like going from Google Maps back to paper maps. Both get you there, but one understands where you are going.
