What you will learn
- Use AI to create analytic rubrics with clear performance level descriptors
- Generate detailed lesson plans with opening, instruction, practice, and closing segments
- Align rubric criteria directly to learning objectives
- Build rubrics that serve as both assessment tools and learning guides for students
Rubrics & Lesson Plans: Designing Backward from Success
Understanding by Design (Wiggins & McTighe) teaches us to design curriculum backward: start with what students should learn (objectives), then define how you'll know they learned it (assessment/rubric), THEN plan the instruction (lesson). Most teachers do this in reverse — planning lessons first and creating assessments after.
AI makes the backward design process practical by generating rubrics and lesson plans quickly from well-written objectives.
Framework: Analytic Rubric Generator
Create an analytic rubric for the following assessment:
Assessment task: [Describe what students will produce]
Learning objective(s) assessed: [List the specific objectives this task measures]
Grade level: [Grade]
Subject: [Subject]
Generate an analytic rubric with:
1. 4-6 criteria (dimensions of quality) directly aligned to the learning objectives
2. 4 performance levels: Exceeds Expectations (4) | Meets Expectations (3) | Approaching (2) | Beginning (1)
3. For each cell in the rubric:
- Use DESCRIPTIVE language (what the student's work looks like at this level)
- NOT evaluative language (avoid "good," "poor," "excellent")
- Include specific, observable indicators
- Make adjacent levels clearly distinguishable
Also include:
- Total possible points and grade conversion
- A student-friendly version (simplified language for self-assessment)
- Common misconceptions or errors to watch for at each criterionUnlock this lesson
