Google NotebookLM is, in our assessment, the most underappreciated AI tool available today. While ChatGPT and Copilot dominate headlines, NotebookLM quietly solves a fundamental problem that no other tool addresses as well: how do you use AI for research without worrying about hallucinated information?

NotebookLM is a free tool (available at notebooklm.google.com) that lets you upload your own documents and then ask questions that are answered exclusively based on those documents. Every response includes numbered citations pointing to the specific passage in your source material where the information came from. You can click any citation to see the original text highlighted in context.

This is not a subtle difference. When you ask ChatGPT or Claude a question, the response comes from the model's training data — and there is always a risk of hallucination (confidently stated but incorrect information). When you ask NotebookLM a question, the response comes from your uploaded documents, with verifiable citations. If NotebookLM cannot find the answer in your sources, it tells you so rather than making something up.
