The Screening Challenge
Every international shipment must be screened against government-maintained lists of denied, blocked, and sanctioned parties. In the US alone, this includes the SDN list (OFAC), Entity List (BIS), Denied Persons List, Unverified List, and several others. Add EU, UK, UN, and other jurisdictions and you're screening against dozens of lists containing tens of thousands of entries — updated weekly or even daily.
The challenge is matching quality. A simple exact-match search misses: - Name variations (Mohamed vs. Mohammed vs. Muhammad) - Transliterations from non-Latin scripts - Corporate name changes and subsidiaries - Address variations and incomplete data
But overly broad fuzzy matching generates thousands of false positives that overwhelm compliance teams, leading to desensitization and, paradoxically, missed real matches buried in alert fatigue.
